NGO Activities : Major Activities The problem of drug addiction was at the peak in the beginning of the 90s It seemed so filthy and ugly an issue to be precise The problem got worsened and tarnished with the detection of HIV antibody positive cases amongst IDUs Peoples attitude towards drug addiction and the drug users was filled with stigma and discrimination The relevant Government departments were unable to come up with practical solutions and were in the dark. There were hardly any committed NGOs then At that crucial juncture in striving for a platform to evolve realistic and practical treatment and behavioral change options among the deprived injecting drug users and PLHAs Lifeline Foundation came into existence on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti 2nd October 1991 at Langthabal Canchipur The uniqueness about this entity is that all the founder members were rehabilitated drug users who have undergone the vicious cycle of the problem added with the complexity of HIV and AIDS and related miseries Presently Lifeline Foundation is constituted by people infected and affected by HIV at its core and assisted by doctor anthropologist computer professionals and women who are affected by drug abuse and HIV & AIDS Enhanced public health conditions of the state in the context of drug abuse HIV & AIDS and related issues so as to enable people live and work together peacefully and harmoniously in a gender just society Create a positive attitude in the life of drug users in particular and the significant others in general Motivate behavioural changes among drug users & PLHAs through appropriate strategies research advocacy and networking Empower women and children affected and infected by drug abuse and HIV &AIDS Achievements It was not the knowledge or skills mainly that enabled us in providing services to fellow drug users and PLHAs Attitude and empathy was the key that helped the clients in accepting Lifeline and its services Ranging from total abstinence model we explored to SNEP syringe and needle exchange program and other Harm Reduction programs as direct service delivery to our clients Then we also focused on sensitization of the primary stakeholders about the programme and other advocacy activities to create enabling environment for behavioural changes among the IDUs Then we started putting efforts in initiating self support groups for widows in 1996 It really took a great deal in trying to bring sustenance through the empowerment process To be precise LLF was one of the first NGOs to adopt the Harm reduction programs like SNEP in the country thanks to Swedish Embassy and NACO for their invaluable support We are presently undertaking three projects namely The Rapid Intervention and Care Project and Healthy Highway Project under the sponsorship of the Manipur State AIDS Control Society and the Awareness Generation Programme among the youths in the four valley districts of Manipur under the valuable assistance of Catholic Relief ServicesGuwahati Above all these progammes and activities, we are emphasizing on streamlining the organization to create an effective workable system to gain sustainability
