ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : KSUDP – Package-2 During 2007, Institute for Societal Advancement took up the consultancy assignment for Design and Supervision for Package-2 – Infrastructural development of Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode Corporations - of Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) under Local Self Govt. Department, Government of Kerala, a project with an estimated cost of Rs.73,500 lakhs assisted by Asian Development Bank. The consultancy (for a fee of Rs.2,351 lakhs) is a joint venture with Water and Power Consultancy Services, New Delhi (WAPCOS). The project is in the third year of inception and all the works are progressing consistently. Bamboo Project Another project taken up by Institute for Societal Advancement is funded by National Wasteland Development Board of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India). Waste Land Development with Sustainable Livelihood, based on bamboo plantation and value added products for housing, food, fodder and bio-fuel in the tribal areas in Palakkad (Attappady). This is executed with the technical support of IIT Delhi. The cost of the project is Rs.325.71 lakhs and under the project, Bamboo has been cultivated in 20 ha. of land belonging to a Society and in another 10 ha. of private land. A building made of Bamboo and a work shed has also been constructed which has been appreciated by national as well as international agencies. Study Support Centre With a view to give support in studies for the SC and ST students, ISA took up the initiative of starting Study Support Centres. A Study Support Centre was started at Thiruvananthapuram in May 2007 for improving the level of education of poor children of the Harijan Colony, Kanjirampara. The children are given refreshment before the classes begin. Three teachers have been engaged to take classes for the children. It is noticed that there is remarkable improvement in the power of understanding vocabulary, communication skill etc. In Attappady, Palakkad district of Kerala, two more Study Support Centres have been started at Kulukkoor and Naikarpady for school going students upto standard X. A total number of 70 students are studying for which 4 teachers have been appointed. PROJECTS COMPLETED • Preparation of City Development Plan (CDP) for Alappuzha Municipality being implemented by Local Self Government Department through Kerala Institute for Local Administration. GoI rated our report as the best among sixteen similar reports prepared under Ford Foundation assistance • Evaluation-cum-Documentation of JBIC (Japanese Bank for International Co-operation) assisted Attappady Wasteland Comprehensive Environmental Conservation Project (AWCECP), funded by Dept. of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Ministry of Rural Development Govt. of India). Based on our report GoI declared the Attappady Project as the best initiative in tribal development in India • Evaluation of the JBIC (Japanese Bank for International Co-operation) funded Forestry Programme (first phase) in Karnataka was another project which has been completed by ISA.
