ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : Highlights of the Last five years • Capacity-building on diverse issues for an emerging cadre of 25 young women activists (sahelis and sakhis) supported by the fellowship program. They are the backbone of the community based programme. • Formation and strengthening of women’s collectives in nearly 45 villages in three blocks of the kangra district. Issues related to sexual harassment, domestic violence, old age pension, women’s health rights and gender equality are addressed through community based redressal mechanisms. • Established two women’s court and a cadre of 15 barefoot lawyers addressing cases of violence against women. • Organization of yearly Health Melas (health information healing camps) and women’s Well being Week (WWW) reaching out to nearly 50 villages every year. • Campaign on the issue of “Declining Sex Ratio in Himachal Pradesh using multiple strategies including awareness building in the community through night meetings, rallies in villages and towns, distribution of posters and leaflets, consultation with local government and non government functionaries, and with representatives of government, the media, demographers, NGO’s, women’s groups, activists, and medical and legal practitioners to deliberate on the deteriorating sex-ratio in several districts of HP and to plan future strategies. • Intervention in 10 government schools of the Kangra District to build gender awareness, body literacy, environmental sensitivity, violence free schools and homes • Providing Tutorial support to children from socially and economically marginalized families to enable them to perform better academically. • Yearly organization of Kishori Kishor Utsav (adolescent girls and boys’ camps) attended by nearly 400 children every year from nearly 70 villages • 20 Farmers groups formed and strengthened on organic farming practices, vermi-composting, mushroom cultivation, soil testing, environmental regeneration etc. • Yearly organization of “Van Mahotsav” ( forest festival ) that includes plantation of 3 to 5000 saplings, workshops on the importance of preservation of environment in 4 to 6 schools, rally by school children, seminars with government and NGO functionaries on issues related to conservation of the Green Cover, globalization and global warming, harmful effect of plastic and non degradable materials • Setting up a farm to demonstrate sustainable agricultural practices such as the principles of biodiversity, organic manure and pesticide and reforestation. • Establishing contacts with government officials, engaging with them in a constructive and proactive manner. • Gender training and workshops for capacity building of NGO, s, CBOs and community members on Gender, health and healing, Violence against Women, single women, organic agriculture and environment. • Established two Knowledge centres in two blocks of the kangra district 2008 • Established a Training and Research Academy as a residential training and learning centre. • Established an Institute on Gender, Democracy and Citizenship (GDC) to be held yearly to develop leadership skills among rural youth from a number of youth organizations in different states. • Started community mobilization programme in 20 tribal villages of the Chamba district. Have emerged as one of the prime women’s organisation in the state.
