ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : a.Educational Programmes We have two Supplementary Educational Centres running in the coastal areas. These centres provide after school learning opportunity to the poor children. About 80 students are benefited now. The service of 3 teachers is used in the centres. b.Micro Credit The Micro credit programmes operate through the Self-Help Groups (SHGs). We have about 500 SHGs and five Federations of SHGs affiliated to CECT. c.Promotion of People’s Organisation People’s organisations among fisher folk and Dalits were formed and nurtured. These include the fishermen’s societies, SHGs and Federation of SHGs and Centre for Mentally Retarded. d.Skill Training Training in skills like papier machie, candle making, OBM Repairs, Ornamental fish culture, Beauty Therapy, etc are given to the women and youth. e.Karunya – A Residential School for the Mentally Challenged Started in 2004, the school is now functioning very well under a team of teachers and staff. The school has 36 children of all different stages of disability. 12 children are residential and 24 are day scholars. They are given good care, treatment, vocational training, special assistance needed, including proper feeding. f.Motivational Training to Dalit Youth We have been conducting a motivational training for the Dalit youth who wish to work as social activists for the betterment of their community. This programme is supported by Voice of Dalit International, a UK charity in association with their Dalit Development programme. g.Tsunami Response Programme When the Tsunami hit the coastal villages of India, the machinery of the organisation was geared to respond to the needs of relief and rehabilitation. This programme was funded by Christian Aid a British Donor Agency, through Skillshare International under twinning partnership arrangement. The programme is activities like. Community Health Program Formation of Community Organisation Advocacy Programmes Disaster Management Fish Vending Programmes Alternate Skill Training Program Co-operative Management Advocacy & Lobbying Disaster Preparedness and Management Program Fishing Gear and Utilities Net Working and Exposure Visits Refrigerated Vehicle for Fish Vending Housing, Repair of houses and Community living Infrastructure building for the rehabilitated villages.
