NGO Activities : Rajiv Gandhi Cultural and Educational Trust (RGCET) Regd No. 351/2002/4 Rajiv Gandhi Cultural and Educational Trust is registered on 23rd day of September 2002 with the register No. 351/2002/4 and with the registered office at Calicut University Staff Organisation building, Calicut University PO Thenhipalam Village, Malappuram District, Kerala State. The main aims and objectives are the following. To take up the mission to propagate the ideals, massages and principles of Mahatma Gandhi and take initiative to institute a Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research at University of Calicut in commemoration of late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister. To conduct seminars, symposia, study circles, lectures, summer schools, workshops, training programmes, correspondence courses etc and to undertake such other academic activities. To set up and run educational institutions such as schools, colleges, teachers training institutions, libraries, study centres etc. To propagate the values and features of Democracy, Nationalism, socialism, Human Rights, self reliance and Environmental awareness. To institute scholarships to the deserving students for higher studies and to organise self employment schemes for the unemployed youths. To encourage art and culture of the country and cultural exchange programmes of interstate and international nature. To set up and run daycare centres and nursery schools for children. To organise programmes for social, cultural and educational upliftment and empowernent of women. To establish, maintain and run poor homes and homes for the aged and destitutes. To function as an agent for implementing scientific, socio, cultural, research projects of various Governmental, Quasi-governmental and non-government organisations and such other funding agencies. Major activities/ Achievements The Trust materialised its prime objective by instituting a Chair for Gandhian Studies and Research at the Calicut University in the year 2004 The Chair has been conducting various programmes like the following regularly Conducting Seminars, lectures, discussions, camps etc on the various themes like peace, non-violence, secularism, communal Harmony, Rural Development, Women empowerment, environment etc, publishing books on Gandhi in collaboration with other organisatons and individuals and honouring the veteran Gandhians and Freedom fighters. The Chair has been approved as a Special Study Centre of IGNOU offering various courses of Study. A state level one day camp was organised on 01.10.2005 for the Gandhian workers. Nearly two hundred delegates from different parts of kearala attended this camp. The topic of the camp was ‘The present condition of social evils against which Gandhi campaigned. A Lecture Series “Know our Nation – Know the Father of the Nation” programme is being implemented in different schools in Malappuram District from 2006. Two day national seminar in ‘Gandhian Legacy’ was conducted at the calicut university campus on August 9th and 10th, 2006. This seminar was organised with the support of Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. Reputed Professors from various Universities presented papers at the seminar. With a view to empower the local poor women, the Trust conducts training camps for imparting the know how of making soaps, candles, umbrellas, and such other swadeshi items. We had distributed the copies of the book ‘Mahatmaji Ezhuthukarante Manassil’ (Mahatmaji in the minds of the writers) to the prisoners in central jails at kannur, Viyyur and Trivandrum with the sponsorship of Kottakal Aryavaidaya Sala, State Bank of Travancore and KVR Bajaj Motors. One day National Seminar on the theme ‘Power of non-violence in the changing scenario’ was organised on 2nd October 2007 in commemoration of Gandhi Jayandhi Day and declared as International Non-violence Day by the UNO. Eminent historians, media persons and Gandhian Social workers presented papers at the seminar. Gandhi Darshan Study Programme has been introduced in Upper primary Schools and High Schools in Malappuram District with the Co-operation of Department of Education, Govt. of Kerala. w.e.f 2004. About 20,000 Students from 250 Schools enrolled themselves in the programme. “Gandhian Kalolsavam”, for the students are conducted as part of this programme, in which various competitions such as Essay writing, Elocution, Drawing, Painting, Patriotic song reciting, Quiz, etc are conducted and certificates and prizes distributed to the students. An annual examination based on the text books prescribed by the Academic Committee for the programme is being conducted and certificates issued to the candidates who pass the exam. Workshop for around 200 teachers in charge Gandhi Darshan Programme are also held twice in a year A national seminar on the ‘Relevance of Gandhian ideals in the present context’ was conducted on 5th October 2008 at the Calicut University seminar complex.
