ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : Assam Centre For Rural Development (ACRD) is a registered voluntary organization which came into existence in 1995. The head office of ACRD is in the city of Guwahati which is the gateway of the North Eastern region of India. This organization is dedicated to the cause of social justice and socio economic development of the rural masses in the tribal dominated areas of Assam. ACRD has been relentlessly putting in its efforts to create an impact on the people to participate in building Rural India as envisaged by the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. ACRD believes in peoples participation in its various activities and programs. During the last few years of its existence ACRD has been making serious efforts for making the rural masses self reliant through income generating activities, thus bringing in socio economic transformation. ACRD came into existence out of the feeling for the need of an organization, which could work for justice, and empowerment of the downtrodden tribal people. One of the functionaries of ACRD was kept in captivity for nearly one year after being abducted by one of the militant groups of Assam. It was during this period that the feeling of neglect, frustration and alienation of the tribal populace away from the national mainstream could be felt deeply. The causes of anger and mistrust amongst the tribal youth could be visibly seen. The ground realities could make one feel that voluntary organizations as facilitators and motivators have a vital role to play to bring about socio economic development of the neglected rural people and instill confidence among them by improving their living condition. Late Dr Lily Mazinder Baruah, a renowned social activist of the North East Region and daughter of Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, first Chief Minister of Assam played a key role in giving birth to ACRD. She even donated a part of her residence for the organization before her sad demise in December 1995.
