ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : RLEK is in Special Consultative Status with Economic and Social Council of United Nations for having special competence in empowering Indigenous Groups, Marginalized Population, Women and Children in claiming their entitlements. RLEK has also been conferred with G.D.Birla International Award for Rural Upliftment, 2005 by the Vice President of India. RLEK started with mission of empowering indigenous, marginalized populations, women and children to claim their rights and entitlements. Thus, to achieve the vision of achieving a just and sustainable society, from the very beginning RLEK has been following the philosophy of including the excluded and reaching the unreached. RLEK has already established its credentials as a NGO serving public causes; the organisation has the distinction of moving the Apex Court in a public cause for preserving environment stopping limestone quarrying around Mussoorie and Doon-Valley. RLEK is running One year Post Graduate Diploma course in Human Rights. The syllabus is covering numerous aspects relating to HR and exposure to the current problems i.e. Preservation of Environment, Helping Weaker and Ignored Citizens of the Society, Protection from Child Abuse, humane conditions for prisoners and persons-in-custody, gender justice etc. RLEKs efforts led to freeing of 19,000 Bonded Laborers in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand. RLEK has also successfully fought the first Environment PIL of India, which led to permanent closure of 101 lime stone quarries thus passing of Environment Protection Act, 1986. RLEKs intervention led to the passing of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 and stopping illegal poppy cultivation in Jaunsar-Bhawar. RLEK successfully completed the Adult Education Programme Drive for the Van Gujjar Community wherein the primers were prepared with the assistance of the community and in their colloquial language; the focus was laid of 3 Rs – Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic. About 250 volunteers migrated with the community to ensure continuity in their education and making more than 21,000 Van-Gujjars Adults literate by the end of the project. RLEK was conferred with the UNESCO-NLM Award, 1999 in recognition of RLEKs Outstanding Contribution to the Adult Education Programme for the Van Gujjar community. Programme further created demand for childrens education, thus now RLEK is running 20 Formal Schools–Fourteen Primary Schools for the children of the marginalised Hill communities, Four Schools for Van-Gujjars children and two mobile-schools for the children practicing transhumance with their families. Schools are built under a unique partnership i.e. land donated by the Community and construction facilitated by RLEK, room for the teacher in school premises is built to avoid absenteeism. Community manages it which ensures transparency. Schools have well-equipped libraries and computers education. SKOCH Challengers Award for Education for its innovative and excellence work for teaching the nomads in the wild and to the marginalized communities. RLEKs Relentless efforts of advocacy-lobbying resulted in the Uttarakhand assembly passing the Bill titled the Uttarakhand Panchayat Law Bill 2008 granting 50 percent reservation for women in panchayats. An Open Forum is held annually to express the aspirations and problems faced by elected women representatives during their tenure.
