NGO Activities : ACHIEVEMENTS OF DOGRI SANSTHA, JAMMU Dogri Sanstha, Jammu was established on Vasant Panchami day in 1944 and as such has completed sixty five years of its existence. It is the eldest and most active literary and cultural organisation of J&K State. Prior to establishment of Dogri Sanstha there was almost no written literature in Dogri except a few translations of religious scriptures. The Sanstha was set up with an express purpose of creating literature in Dogri and making people aware of their culture and heritage . It has achieved this goal to a great extent and has succeeded in initiating and spearheading a literary and cultural movement , which has resulted in creation of thousands of books in Dogri, inclusion of Dogri in school, college and university curriculum of the state, recognition of Dogri as an independent literary language by the Sahitya Akademi and ultimately the inclusion of Dogri in the 8th schedule of Indian Constitution . It is rightly said that history of development of Dogri literature is the history of Dogri Sanstha. During these sixty five years, Dogri Sanstha has created great awareness among the people of the country and the state in general, and the Dogri speaking people in particular, about their rich cultural heritage. It played an important role during 1947-48 in arousing the sentiments of the people against the Pakistani invasion by holding Kavi sammelans in different parts of Jammu region and by staging Drama Shows before large audiences. It also organised the first exhibition of Pahari Miniature Paintings at Tikri in 1948 and was instrumental in the setting up of Dogra Art Gallery presently in Jammu. Dogri Sanstha brought out its first publication in Dogri entitled "Jago Duggar " in 1949. Till date it has brought out more than hundred fifteen books, their number being second only to the books published by the J&K academy of Art, culture and Languages. It is bringing out a quarterly magazine "Nami Chetna" and till date, about 166 volumes have been published. It has also brought out special numbers of children’s literature, women literature as well as novels, criticism etc. All this has been the result of the voluntary efforts of the writers, poets, play-wrights, artists etc. It has also organised nine All India Dogri Writers conferences, workshops on theatre, a large number of seminars and symposia, debates and declamation contests. It has also been organising Lok melas, wherein the rich folk cultural traditions of the Dogras are highlighted through the holding of exhibition of folk arts and crafts , and programmes of folk music and folk dances. The Sanstha also organises literary meets. It has also a programme, an evening with eminent Author, playwright, artists etc.. Dogri Sanstha started free coaching classes for the Shiromani Course and continued doing this for bout 25 years. At present Sanstha is conducting free coaching classes for IAS and KAS candidates for the Dogri subject . It was with the efforts of Dogri Sanstha that the Post Graduate Department in Dogri in Jammu university was started in the year 1983 . Sanstha also helps the needy students by providing them free books and guidance. Dogri Sanstha has got its own Bhavan known as Dogri Bhavan, which was constructed at a cost of Rs.5 lacs. Out of this , only a grant of Rs 90,000 was received from Govt. of India and the remaining amount was raised through public donations . Dogri Sanstha had been in the forefront in demanding the inclusion of Dogri in the VIIIth schedule of the Union Constitution, which was accepted by the Govt. of India on 22nd December , 2003. Dogri Sanstha has set up a library which has collection of all Dogri books published so far and also books about Dogra art, culture , language and literature.Sanstha has conducted many surveys for collecting data on buildings of heritage importance , folk-songs, folk-tales and on other cultural aspects.
