ACTIVITIES

NGO Activities : Indian Association for Pre School Education (IAPE) was a National body catering to those working in the fields of Child Development, Early Childhood Education and Child Welfare services. It was established in 1964, and had 17 branches all over the country. As a result of committed efforts of many professionals who were pioneers in the field of early childhood education, IAPE was able to make significant contributions towards early childhood education. IAPE had been actively involved in enhancing early childhood teacher education. IAPE has also addressed various issues and concerns emerging in the field of early childhood education at the national as well as regional levels. IAPE had also made sustained efforts in networking with other organizations on issues of common interest and concern, to strengthen the inter-disciplinary approach and advocacy on early childhood care and development. Coimbatore branch was one of the earliest branches established by IAPE in its efforts to reach out to the farthest corners of the country and also had the honour of housing the centre (Head Office) for 8 years under the able stewardship of Mrs.S.S.Jayalakhsmi. The branch hosted the 24th Annual conference and also conducted various workshops and seminars for teachers, parents and all other stakeholders involved in the welfare of a child. The branch had a number of publications to its credit. Coimbatore centre reached out to the tribal, rural, semi urban areas also imparting education and care for the young children. The challenges faced by the IAPE, changed with the advent of technology and the new challenges faced by the children as well as the newer opportunities thrown up, the changes in the life style of people, the slow disappearance of joint families, etc. The senior members felt the need for enlarging the activities of IAPE in tune with the changing times and decided to review the objectives of IAPE and also the way it has been operating since its inception in 1964. Subsequently, the Working group of the IAPE decided to dissolve IAPE nationally and operate under the new name and style of Association Early Childhood Education and Development. A meeting of the working group of the earlier IAPE or the ad hoc committee for registering the Association for Early Childhood Education and Development (AECED) and transferring the matters related to the old IAPE, was held on 28th and 29th of February 2007. The decisions taken at the meeting was communicated to the centre’s early this year and the office bearers of the branches were invited to attend the inaugural meeting of AECED at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai on April12, 2009. The Coimbatore branch convened a general body meeting on April 8, 2009 at Sree Narayana Guru Mission Matriculation School to discuss the course of action to be taken as the Coimbatore branch also stood dissolved with the dissolution of the national body. A unanimous decision was taken to register the Coimbatore branch as a separate entity and to decide on affiliating with AECED after receiving the bye laws and the objectives from AECED. None of the office bearers were in a position to attend the meeting at Mumbai and there was no communication from AECED regarding the decisions taken at Mumbai. Subsequently, the Executive Committee met and decided to implement the decision taken in the general body meeting to form a new association with head quarters at Coimbatore. It was also decided to retain the same office bearers, to ensure continuity and hadn over to a new set of office bearers within a year, if need be. Mr.C.L.Mohan Naarayan, a life member of the erstwhile IAPE was drafted in to the Executive Committee as Secretary (Programmes). Mr.Mohan took the initiative to frame the new bye laws with the bye laws of the erstwhile IAPE as the base and he submitted the same to the Executive committee for approval. The patron Mrs.S.S.Jayalaskhmi alongwith the other Executive members scrutinized the same and approved for registration. It was decided to adopt the name and style of “Association for Pre & Primary School Education And Research (APPEAR)” for the new entity that would come into existence. APPEAR was duly registered under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act 1975 and was allotted the registration number 184 / 2009.
