NGO Activities : Major Activities Children Children come first in CEDARs agenda of working with the most vulnerable. Under poverty conditions, children become easy victims. Child labour, bondedness, absence of schooling, issues of out of school children, malnutrition, rights violations and abuse are manifest issues that call for intervention. In 1994 CEDAR chose to come to the much talked about match industry belt where poverty and child labour were rife. Initially started with 12 villages now CEDARs intervention extends to 164 villages spread across Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar districts in southern Tamilnadu. CEDARs Child Rights Programme aims singularly at ensuring every child his or her childhood. We realise that every child needs very careful nurturing of his or her self. This alone would enable him or her make a natural transition into a wholesome and fulfilling adulthood. We work directly with 5000 children organized into 164 Children Collectives, spread in 163 rural communities. Women Child labour was intricately linked to livelihood challenges of families living below poverty line. Pushed into the nurturing role, women took up all kinds of employment wittingly and unwittingly inducing their children to take up a supportive role through child labour. When match industries invaded poor homes through putting out system and piece rate employment, women took to match work in large scale and children were automatically socialised into it at home. Then it became imperative that we addressed womens livelihood issues with vigour. CEDAR has raised 400 women SHGs spread along 75 villages involving 6000 women. Development Education, Research and Training CEDAR uses reflexivity as the dominant motif of its functions. We use the knowledge and professional skills acquired through development action and research to impart trainings and support services to enhance the capacities of partner organizations. This is done through NGO Capacity Building Programmes that had been completed three phases starting from 1996. CEDAR builds resources through NGO, Academic and Research Institution interface at the local, national and international levels. We do collaborative research, joint initiatives, development exchange and exposures.
